Georgia Department of Transportation—Talbotton Road Project: Capacity, Pedestrian, and Transit Improvements

Georgia DOT carefully considered all road users as it worked to improve safety and mobility on Talbotton Road in Columbus. Home to two major medical facilities and a university, Talbotton Road was in dire need of an upgrade to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and improve safety for transit riders and pedestrians. As a result, GDOT’s $35 million project utilized the existing corridor and additional right of way to transform the two-lane road into a four-lane highway with a continuous center turn lane that prevents backups. The additional right of way also allowed for new sidewalks and covered bus stops on both sides of the roadway, significantly improving walkability and access for transit users and pedestrians.
