The Courtland Street Bridge in Atlanta connects travelers to Georgia State University and downtown Atlanta, and at 110 years old, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) knew it was in desperate need of repair. This $21 million project was a complex undertaking, with businesses and pedestrian traffic that would be impacted by the construction. To mitigate this, GDOT chose an innovative approach, Accelerated Bridge Construction, which allowed the department to complete the replacement in a shorter amount of time, as compared to other construction methods – saving time and money while allowing this busy thoroughfare to keep people moving.
