Illinois Department of Transportation – Clybourn Avenue Protected Bike Lane

Illinois Department of Transportation’s $700,000 protected bike lane project in Chicago improved safety and encouraged bicycle ridership along Clybourn Avenue – an important artery there. Project features include a three-foot-wide curbside lane to separate bikes from vehicular traffic, bike-specific traffic signals to separate turning movements, and push-button bike signal activation adjacent to the bike lane for less frequent thru-movements. These features encourage people of all ages to travel safely no matter which mode they use, planners say. Crews completed the project in advance of a major residential and commercial development project in order to keep people moving through that private project and foster economic activity.
