Iowa Department of Transportation—Council Bluffs Interstate System Dual, Divided Freeway

Iowa DOT reduced crashes, congestion, and operational challenges with this $1 billion unique freeway configuration project. The dual, divided freeway offers increased freeway mobility and better traveler information. Color changeable message signs were installed throughout the dual, divided freeway to improve driver interpretation of work zone and incident management mitigation efforts. Entering the freeway, drivers are provided with pavement marking interstate shields and unique static signing for better wayfinding through the system. These enhancements to the new freeway prioritize operations and allow for greater safety and mobility for drivers.
