The Iowa Department of Transportation embarked on a pilot project using Building Information Modeling or BIM to create a 3D model of three bridges on I-801/380 north of Iowa City. This $38.2 million project not only helped the department save time and streamline future bridge projects while exploring a new technology, it will also improve maintenance projects going forward. In total, the project modeled over 4,200 feet of bridge to the smallest detail – accounting for non-bridge elements like existing roadways and utilities to better identify potential conflicts in the planning and construction. The department will continue to update the model throughout the life of the bridges.
