Kansas Department of Transportation’s $16 million wetlands/trails project provided hikers and bicyclists with dedicated trails through natural habitats in Lawrence, plus small parking lots. It also restored wetlands in the process. The project was designed to help mitigate environmental impacts from the construction of a six-mile South Lawrence Trafficway bypass around the city, and replaced, created or restored 375 acres of wetlands. It built noise-buffering walls and a community center to provide education, outreach and recreational opportunities to visitors and residents for years to come. And the investment created an endowment to provide for future maintenance of those wetlands.
