Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Mayfield Tornado Response

On December 10, 2021, a severe tornado left the town of Mayfield in shambles. From piles of debris blocking streets to loss of landmarks and street signs, the tornado created widespread damage across the community – leaving hundreds suddenly homeless and in need of shelter. Transportation connectivity had to be restored before other recovery efforts could start. This $10 million effort helped the town recover from a horrendous natural disaster – covering everything from deploying trailers to provide temporary housing to reopening roadways. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 1 crews divided the city into zones and opened all streets to basic travel in one day. In just four days, streets were cleared of debris and life mostly returned to normal.
