Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development— I-210 Queue Detection System

On the Prien Lake Bridge on I-210, heavy traffic caused congestion, crashes, and long wait times for travelers. In order to address this, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) began utilizing a “Queue Detection System.” This $35 million traffic solution, which uses speed detectors and other traffic controls, gives drivers travel information in real time. For the DOTD, the system also includes changeable message signs, flasher trailers, speed sensors, and more. These were placed along I-210, I-10, and US 90 in Lake Charles. By providing this valuable information to motorists, it allowed them to make more informed travel decisions and reduce time sitting in traffic.
