Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development – I-49 Segment K Phase 2

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development needed an innovative solution that would allow for smoother roads throughout the state and beyond. The $142 million I-49 Segment K Phase 2 project focused on a section of I-220. This particular segment, comprised of overpasses and bridges, used pre-cast bridge segments in order to reduce the impact to the traveling public. The casting yard ultimately used 22,000 cubic yards of concrete and 5.3 million pounds on reinforcing steel. During the construction of the overpasses, the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-220 were also being completely reconstructed, both to improve the travel experience and to have better alignment to the interchange. All of this was done without interruption to traffic flow.
