Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development – Metal Culvert Project

Culverts have long been a part Louisiana’s transportation network, as they provide a way of moving water across a roadway at a lower cost, with many metal culverts in use for more than 30 years. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development embarked on a $1.6 million effort to study how such culverts perform under various conditions and improved overall safety while saving time and money; a study completed without disruption to traffic. The results of the study helped create a new standard operating procedure and the creation of specialize equipment – particularly in the state’s low-lying areas. The results also helped to better determine the life of existing culverts, allowing many of them to remain in service and continue moving water so traffic can flow freely.
