Three intersections on US 51 Business (US 51B) in Hammond were becoming a safety issue for Louisiana DOTD. Traffic wasn’t flowing efficiently, leading to safety concerns for vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians. Louisiana DOTD began looking for a fix and eventually landed on three roundabouts. Roundabouts would redirect some of the conflicting traffic (especially left-hand turns), resulting in fewer crashes and incidents.
Louisiana DOTD installed the roundabouts at US 51B at I-12 on both the westbound and eastbound ramps and another at US 51B at Club Deluxe Road and removed the existing traffic signals. In addition to other safety improvements (such as median improvements), the new $7.3 million roundabouts have resulted in a smoother and safer commute for drivers around Hammond.
