Located on Baltimore Harbor’s Tunnel, the Patapsco River Bridge carries traffic north and southbound across Interstate 895. After conducting a study in 2012, the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) found the bridge was reaching the end of its service life and needed to be replaced. The solution was a $48.5 million project that rehabilitated the existing “superstructure.” The new design features the use of lightweight and innovative materials, which adds to the bridge’s lifespan. Taking place on a busy highway that carries 34,000 vehicles per day, MDOT and its partners were able to complete the project in short time frame – allowing everyone to get back on the road quickly and safely.
