Minnesota Department of Transportation—Trunk Highway 61 Grand Marais Reconstruction Project

Minnesota DOT improved pedestrian mobility and safety for the people along the north shore of Lake Superior through this $19.2 million project. The project included narrowing the roadway, building better biking and pedestrian facilities along each side of the roadway and creating an environment where highway traffic would slow down so crossing the roadway would be safer. The innovative land use project created an attractive roadside environment that includes places to gather and rest, improved green space, lighting that improved visibility for people biking and walking and intersection lighting while preserving the dark sky environment of the North Shore.
