The 54-year-old Interstate 435 in Kansas City used to be known as the “I-435 parking lot” for its constant traffic jams. It also required critical repairs to both its pavement and bridges. The Missouri Department of Transportation’s $64.5 million solution reduced congestion and improved overall safety – all while saving time and money. The innovative new design eliminated the need to remove the existing pavement while increasing its use for another 40 years. On top of that, the agency added an extra lane even as it completed repairs to those bridges – all without disrupting traffic. Due to this new and collaborative approach, drivers have a smoother commute without getting caught in a “parking lot.”
