Adjacent to two of Kansas City’s biggest sports attractions, the Interstate 435 and Interstate 70 interchange sees over 200,000 travelers a day and was prone to traffic backups. The Missouri Department of Transportation’s $47 million project provided much needed congestion relief and now saves drivers time on their commutes. Beginning in the spring of 2019, MoDOT began working on a redesign to remove the bridges and improve the overall configuration of the interchange. This required MoDOT to institute closures at heavily used ramps and close I-435 and I-70. Completed in November 2020, MoDOT constructed a partial turbine, built 10 new bridges and 14 new retaining walls, and paved new roadway. These improvements resulted in faster and safer trips for sports fans and other travelers alike.
