The Missouri Department of Transportation oversees the 7th-largest highway system in the country. In order to address the serious injuries and fatalities, it needed a new, more innovative solution. Enter the data-driven $24.11 million Safety Design-Build Improvement Project, which combined expertise and experience of the department, construction, and contract industries – along with the latest research – to put together a project’s safety requirements. This includes the development of tools and a scoring system to optimize the safety-cost benefit of projects across the St. Louis region, helping the department prioritize safety without maximizing the cost. Those low-cost safety improvements were integrated into 31 different projects – helping save lives across the region.
