Montana Department of Transportation: Toston Structures Project: Upgrading Aging Infrastructure for Multimodal Safety on US-287

Montana DOT increased access and reliability for the rural community of Toston and improved multimodal safety with the $45 million Toston Structures Project, located on US Highway 387.

The project represents an important upgrade of aging infrastructure to meet design and environmental standards, while staying firmly focused on safety concerns. In a recent five-year study, this corridor experienced higher crash frequency and more severe crashes than similar roadways across Montana. However, by replacing bridges crossing the Missouri River and Montana Rail Link track that were about 70 years old and improving multimodal access, the completed project alleviates past safety concerns while boosting capacity to accommodate future traffic demands.
