A historic bridge that once carried thousands of motorists across US Highway 4 and New Hampshire 16 was the site of a temporary and innovative solution for non-motorized travelers. With the General Sullivan Bridge closed to traffic and due for construction in 2022, the only access point for bicyclists and pedestrians to get to the town of Little Bay was eliminated. After trying other temporary solutions – including shuttles to take travelers back and forth – the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) decided to utilize one of the existing lanes in the turnpike until the new bike and pedestrian bridge was completed to accommodate the traffic. The community now has transportation options that are safe and appreciated by all until a permanent solution is in place.
