New Hampshire Department of Transportation— Ossipee, NH Slide in Bridge

Route 16 in Ossipee is a popular access point carrying up to 18,000 vehicles per day. When looking at the possibility of replacing the bridge, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) decided to keep the current road alignment and replace the bridge using an innovative “slide-in construction” technique. This technique allows for a structure to be built on temporary supports (usually beside the old bridge) and moved completely to replace the existing structure, allowing the roadway to stay in its current location while minimizing environmental impacts and saving money. NHDOT worked together with the community to determine the best times to perform the work without disrupting traffic, allowing the project to be completed on time in just under 72 hours and ultimately getting traffic moving again safely.
