New Hampshire Department of Transportation—Ossipee Roundabout

NH Route 28 is a vital regional arterial highway traversing the Lakes Region of New Hampshire; yet its intersection with NH Route 171 had a history of severe crashes. The New Hampshire Department of Transportation worked for several years to study potential improvements and reach consensus via a road safety audit and public outreach with little success. However, fatal crashes in 2016 and 2018 prompted the community to demand action. NHDOT revisited the design alternatives with Ossipee town representatives – particularly the choice between a traffic signal and a roundabout – and convinced officials of the significant safety and operational benefits that a roundabout would provide. The completed $2.1 million roundabout interchange now provides reliable movement through the town while keeping all drivers safe.
