I-280 and Route 21 provide a vital connection through the city of Newark, carrying around 80,000 vehicles a day. When safety concerns became apparent at the interchange, the New Jersey Department of Transportation began looking for a solution. The $95 million interchange replacement project focused on constructing and rehabilitating the existing infrastructure – building four new bridges, rehabilitated two bridges inside the interchange, widening the road and constructing shoulders, and eliminating two direct ramps onto the interstate, all of which vastly improved the design to ensure that traffic could flow smoother. These improvements now allow everyone to get where they need to be faster and safer.
