North Carolina Department of Transportation—Marc Basnight Bridge / Herbert C. Bonner Bridge Replacement

The old Herbert C. Bonner Bridge, a major connection to Hatteras and Bodie Islands on the Outer Banks, was a source of consternation, requiring constant repairs. After nearly three decades of planning, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) was finally able to begin work for the replacement of the bridge. The new $252 million Marc Basnight Bridge provides safer passage to the islands and prioritizes the safety of wildlife and the environment. The bridge is now able to withstand strong winds, ocean surges, and more. The bridge was constructed with precast concrete, which allows for a greater lifespan. This vital link and hurricane evacuation route is now able to better withstand the elements, keeping travelers safe, even in times of distress.
