North Carolina Department of Transportation – Reimagining Rural Transit with Technology

The North Carolina Department of Transportation collaborated with the city of Wilson to launch RIDE, a transit service that uses technology to meet the transportation challenges in rural areas. Before RIDE, residents relied on a fixed-route system. RIDE saves time and creates better access to the city by allowing residents to request a ride to a series of virtual bus stops via a mobile app, web site, or over the phone. The app allows users to pay for trips, get real-time updates, and evaluate driver performance. Even with the challenges of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for RIDE continues to grow. With consistent, reliable, and accessible transit as its main goals, the $1.5 million RIDE project helps residents get to where they need to be more efficiently.
