Ohio Department of Transportation’s $11.2 million project replaced an obsolete bridge over an active Norfolk Southern Rail line with a unique and innovative design that decreased construction costs and will reduce its future maintenance costs. As one of the few east-west state routes in Northeast Ohio, this bridge is vital for the shipment of goods and materials to surrounding communities, not only along US 20, but also on the Norfolk Southern railroad below. Through exceptional engineering and construction techniques, crews reduced the impacts to the rail operations while completing the project sooner than expected. The new design allows for the future expansion of rail lines to position the City of Conneaut as a major hub for freight movement, which is vital to the state’s economy.
