Harshman Road in Montgomery County is a major urban arterial, connecting drivers to Wright Patterson Air Force Base and the National Museum of the United States Air Force. The existing four-span bridge, built more than half-century ago, became structurally deficient as it reached the end of its service life.
ODOT built a $1.25 million new three-span bridge with four through lanes, a center left-turn lane, and a dedicated bike lane, which connects the two entrances of popular Eastwood Metro Park on either side of the Mad River and allows for future construction of a bike path along Harshman Road. The new bridge also accommodates the newly extended Mad River Trail bikeway, which runs under the bridge. The new bridge has allowed for a safer, smoother ride for drivers while also better accommodating bicyclists, offering better protection with their own dedicated lane and allowing for additional transportation options.
