AL: Gulf Coast Hurricane Evacuation Route Project
Led by the Alabama Department of Transportation, construction on the project to widen State Highway 113 from two to four lanes, covering 13.5 miles, began September 12, 2007. The completed widening replaces a choke point along a major emergency hurricane evacuation route from coastal Florida to inland Alabama. The road opened all four lanes to traffic on November 4, 2008, six months ahead of schedule.
