Seven bridges along NC 12 on Ocracoke Island were replaced as part of this challenging project, headed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. By instituting a variety of innovative management techniques, NCDOT, in collaboration with its partners, used full road closures from January to March to replace all seven bridges within 75 calendar days. NC 12 was opened to traffic on March 5, 2008, ten days early.
