DC: Union Station Bicycle Transit Center Project

Washington , DC

The District Department of Transportation opened a bicycle transit center alongside Union Station in downtown Washington, DC. The 1,700-square-foot structure houses 150 bicycle racks, personal lockers, a bicycle repair shop, and a retail shop. It is the first secure bicycle facility of its kind on the East Coast.

The Bikestation project focused on people by improving their safety and daily commute. Buses, cars, taxis, pedestrians, and bicyclists all shared the same space near Union Station, resulting in a highly congested area. Beyond the obvious promotion of a transportation mode with no carbon footprint, the Bikestation’s design also included several other “green accents,” such as solar heating and passive airflow cooling.
