PA: Spring Road Bridge Replacement Project

2010 Top 10 Nominee
Best Recovery Act Project – Small Project
Spring Road Bridge Replacement Project
North Middleton Township, Cumberland County, PA

Spring Road is a heavily traveled corridor that connects northern Cumberland County in Central Pennsylvania to the business community of Carlisle and beyond. Spring Road crosses Conodoguinet Creek over a 188-foot steel plate bridge, originally constructed in 1930 and now in deteriorating condition. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) had designated it for replacement.

Anticipating possible American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding on the horizon, PennDOT accelerated the schedule and completed bid documents one year ahead of schedule in early 2009. After the ARRA bill was signed, PennDOT expedited the bidding process and awarded the contract in April 2009. Construction began in June 2009 and was finished in November.
