Nominee: Innovative Management – Small Project The challenges presented by the replacement of the US 52 bridge over the Iowa, Chicago and Eastern railroad and Mill Creek – in the town of Bellevue – required innovative solutions to address aesthetic, technical, schedule and access issues. Located in a scenic, historic setting in eastern Iowa, the project required willingness by owners, designers and the contractor to listen to the needs of stakeholders and center the project on addressing those needs. The resulting project provided a creative transportation solution that brought enhancements to the community, improved vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle mobility and improved safety, while maintaining highway and rail traffic throughout construction. The project team worked toward a common goal to accomplish the project’s objectives. The successes of the project could not have been accomplished without commitment by all parties to embrace innovation. The bridge opened ahead of schedule in spring 2010. |
