Nominee: Innovative Management – Small Project The Indiana Department of Transportation used a unique partnership of dedicated individuals from the private and public sectors to complete a beautification project along a six-mile stretch of I-70 that is benefiting the business community, private citizens and visitors to the city of Indianapolis. The project used more than 8,500 volunteers to plant more than 80,000 native plants and trees in five interchange locations. During the closure, INDOT employees replaced highway signs, repaired bridge joints, cleaned drainage areas and inspected bridges. This work normally could not take place while the highway is open to traffic. Approximately three months of work was accomplished during the closure, which lasted just over 11 hours. |
