MA: Phiilipston Bridge Replacement Project

WINNER: Innovative Management – Small Project
Phillipston Bridge Replacement Project
Phillipston, MA

The $3.3 million Phillipston Heavy Lift Bridge Replacement Project, completed in November 2010, was the fastest bridge replacement in Massachusetts history and the state’s first use of Self Propelled Modular Transporters for bridge replacement.

The Phillipston Heavy Lift project is part of the state’s historic $3 billion Accelerated Bridge Program. It is an excellent example of how a highway project can be managed efficiently to provide superior customer service, durable infrastructure improvements and a safe work zone.

The project’s rapid construction, short detour routes, and effective communications limited road user impacts to the maximum extent practicable, resulting in road user cost avoidance totaling $2.5M. More importantly, the project’s success has spurred MassDOT to use accelerated bridge construction techniques to replace sixteen superstructures in 2011 alone, with many more projects being evaluated. MassDOT has reduced the number of structurally deficient bridges by over 15% percent in a period of just over two years.
