WINNER: On Time – Medium Project The Michigan Department of Transportation turned to the public for answers when planning the project that rebuilt and rehabilitated 2.5 miles of freeway near Grand Rapids. This $40 million project used significant public partnership efforts – more than 100 community meetings – to develop consensus among the stakeholders. They agreed that having the job done in a single construction season with the complete closure of the freeway to through traffic was preferable to a multi-year project with traffic moving through a work zone. Work on the 2-mile segment of I-196 began in October 2009 and finished in November 2010. The final project built an additional through-lane in each direction; a new weave/merge lane in each direction connecting three interchanges and five new bridges. |
