MI: The Fix on I-196 Project

WINNER: On Time – Medium Project
The Fix on I-196 Project
Grand Rapids, MI

The Michigan Department of Transportation turned to the public for answers when planning the project that rebuilt and rehabilitated 2.5 miles of freeway near Grand Rapids.

This $40 million project used significant public partnership efforts – more than 100 community meetings – to develop consensus among the stakeholders. They agreed that having the job done in a single construction season with the complete closure of the freeway to through traffic was preferable to a multi-year project with traffic moving through a work zone. Work on the 2-mile segment of I-196 began in October 2009 and finished in November 2010.

The final project built an additional through-lane in each direction; a new weave/merge lane in each direction connecting three interchanges and five new bridges.
