NJ: Route 18 Reconstruction Project

WINNER: On Time – Large Project
Route 18 Reconstruction Project
New Brunswick, NJ

Prior to rehabilitation, New Jersey Route 18 was plagued with some of the worst traffic congestion in the state, threatening the regional economic vitality. The On-Time delivery of the $215 million multi-interchange project was a masterful blend of extensive community partnering and innovative methodologies. The project’s marquee, the George Street Bridge, is one of the largest structures of its kind in North America and the first in the world to combine precast concrete arches with a lightweight cellular concrete overfill. The project’s innovative design reconnected the City of New Brunswick with its beloved waterfront with more than five miles of multi-use paths and sidewalks designed specifically for non-motorized travel, the newly expanded Boyd Park, a new community boat ramp, a playground area, and a picnic pavilion.
