Nominee: Innovative Management – Medium Project WVDOT recently completed rebuilding the Interstate 64 bridge over the Kanawha River in Dunbar, about seven miles west of the West Virginia Capitol in Charleston. The reconstructed span has eased traffic flow for commuters. The additional lanes provided by this structure has reduced congestion and driver stress. The department carefully managed the project to ensure minimal interference with traffic flow along this stretch of interstate in Dunbar and neighboring South Charleston. Although local officials had expressed before construction began fears of severe traffic problems, WVDOT ensured the method of construction caused little disruption. A technique known as “balanced cantilever construction” contributed to the project’s quick pace and reduced impacts on traffic passing over the river. |
