Florida Department of Transportation was faced with a unique challenge. The aging and structurally deficient A. Max Brewer Bridge over the Indian River needed to be replaced. The original swing bridge regularly delayed commuters heading to work and tourists heading to nearby attractions. But the bridge also stretched across a sensitive environmental area that featured protected sea grass and manatee winter migration paths. FDOT chose to build a new $44.8 million fixed span bridge, providing essential upgrades for both motorists and boaters. With innovative project management and careful attention to the environmental impacts, the new bridge has eliminated a constant chokepoint and protected sensitive environmental areas. |
