Georgia Department of Transportation alleviated much of damage done by daily wear and tear of Interstate 285, the busiest interstate in Atlanta, and saved taxpayer dollars through its I-285 Micro Milling project. The innovative concept of micro milling, a specific way to grind down a portion of the asphalt surface, was used on the more than 40-year-old highway after GDOT found it to be the most financially practical solution to preserve the roadway. Originally expecting costs of $50 million to $60 million, the project was completed at a cost of $10.8 million. And, the project extended the pavement life of I-285 for motorists for up to five years. |
