Using a design-build approach, the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s $49 million I-40 Widening Project finished 18 months ahead of schedule, relieving congestion for drivers on one of North Carolina’s busiest stretches of interstate. I-40 near Raleigh was known for its crawling traffic during daily morning and evening commutes. Using a design-build contract allowed NCDOT to design, permit, purchase right-of-way, conduct utility relocation, and begin construction under a single contract. With the interstate increased from four to six lanes, motorists save an average of 15 minutes of travel time and no longer have to deal with the constant congestion. |
