The South Dakota Department of Transportation used an innovative strategy of communicating during construction to help strengthen ties with the local Oglala Sioux Tribe. The SDDOT’s $15 million US Highway 18, Oglala to Pine Ridge Project included reconstruction of more than 15 miles of highway in order to reduce crashes along the route that had exceeded the state average. The project, which also improved safety for pedestrians, included grading, interim surfacing, and slope flattening in rural areas as well as roadway lighting and sidewalk improvements near the pedestrian routes. |
