For highway foremen working in the field, manually submitting their time at the end of the pay period proved an antiquated process; logging in to a web portal from a desktop computer every time. Thus the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation wanted a solution that provided employees with the flexibility to log work time from any location. Completed entirely in-house, the $830,000 ePayroll app allows field workers to complete their timecards using a mobile device. The agency’s business and information technology staff worked together to develop the app in just six months, allowing users to provide feedback on a regular basis to ensure the final product met both their requirements and expectations. The final app not only duplicated existing forms, but allowed employees to locate each other and equipment by their employee number. For employees, this new technology makes the data entry process more intuitive, accurate, and seamless.
