From now through April 8, state departments of transportation may now nominate up to three projects in the America’s Transportation Awards competition.
This competition–sponsored by AASHTO, AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce–highlights the exceptional projects completed each year by state DOTs that make a difference in the communities in which they exist. State DOTs are utilizing new technologies and ways of doing things, making the most of the transportation systems that already exist for greater efficiency, and delivering new projects to increase mobility for all transportation modes.
States will enter each project in one of the following categories: “Quality of Life/Community Development,” “Best Use of Technology & Innovation,” or “Operations Excellence.” Nominees should focus on telling the story of the project and the impact it has on the community.
All nominated projects will first compete on a regional level against projects of their own category and size: “small” (projects costing less than $25 million), “medium” (projects between $25 million and $199 million) or “large” (projects $200 million or more). These winners are announced at each regional meeting, held throughout the summer.
After all regional winners have been announced, the three highest scoring projects from each region will be named the “Top 12” and will go on to compete for the top two national prizes. The Grand Prize is determined by an independent panel of judges. The People’s Choice Award is determined by online votes. Both winners are announced at the 2022 AASHTO Annual Meeting, held in Orlando this October.
