South Carolina Department of Transportation—Lockhart Bridge Replacements through Historic Mill Village

For two decades, the S.C. 9 bridges in Lockhart/Union County had been flagged for replacement, having functioned for more than 70 years. The existing bridges had begun to show structural issues. Looking at a Broad River Bridge closure meant an inconvenient and expensive 55-mile detour for travelers. To increase safety and provide better infrastructure for other modes of transportation, South Carolina DOT replaced four bridges along S.C. 9 while providing new sidewalks and roadway shoulders through the corridor. In addition to avoiding that very long detour, SCDOT improved safety for drivers and pedestrians alike, while providing connectivity to the area’s walking trails for community recreation and health.
