South Carolina Department of Transportation – S.C. 61 Phase 1 (Rural Road Safety Program)

South Carolina Road 61 is a registered scenic byway and home to many significant landmarks in the Southeast United States. The South Carolina Department of Transportation developed the Rural Road Safety Program to address incidents along this route and other rural roads throughout the state, improving overall safety for drivers. In line with that program, SCDOT used techniques to reduce the number of trees removed during upgrade work on S.C. Road 61. The project also updated pavement along the route while adding new lanes and repaving the road’s shoulders. The $4.4 million project – completed in under six months – saved SCDOT time and money and now serves as a statewide model; all while improving motorists safety on this rural road for years to come.
