Deemed structurally inefficient, the two-lane U.S. 15 Bridge over Indian Field Swamp needed replacing. The South Carolina Department of Transportation’s solution prioritized the environment and reduced construction time. Due to challenges at the site, SCDOT opted to perform eclectic and utility coordination off site to keep construction on schedule. Coordinating with local government, SCDOT communicated detour information and mitigated traffic delays, even helping fund staffing for the local volunteer fire station to keep services operation while the station closed during the bridge construction project. Thanks to this innovative approach, an expanded bridge now allows for better traffic flow and shorter drive times.
