South Dakota DOT increased safety for motorists during treacherous weather while also saving taxpayer dollars via its roughly $3 million Maintenance Decision Support System (MDSS) Operation Plan.
The South Dakota DOT’s research project on the MDSS Operation Plan received national recognition for its innovation to how states handle winter maintenance operations. The MDSS provides road treatment recommendations to winter maintenance personnel based upon road and weather conditions. The goal of the research project was to develop an implementation strategy for future use of MDSS within the South Dakota DOT.
Implementing the findings from the study resulted in a more effective and efficient use of resources, increased accuracy in storm prediction, improved public outreach, and more consistent scheduling for plow operators.
