South Dakota Department of Transportation: U.S. Highway 83 Corridor Improvements and Reconstruction

U.S. Highway 83 plays a crucial role as a north-south connection linking Brownsville, Texas, to Westhope, North Dakota, as well as between Mexico and Canada. This route – which passes through a predominantly rural area in South Dakota – is also a vital freight corridor as well, carrying 1,500 to 2,800 vehicles per day. This $112 million project expanded the capacity of U.S. Highway 83 while also adding in two new shared-use paths to boost pedestrian safety. As a result, this greatly improved traffic flow as well as creating safer areas to walk, run, and bike. The project also smoothed out several vertical curves along the roadway to improve safety for vehicular traffic.
