SDDOT realized that Highway 14/6th Street in Brookings needed to be reconstructed because it was no longer able to accommodate daily traffic counts and was deteriorating, raising safety concerns. The roadway is the gateway to the city and is the main point of access for numerous businesses, industries, and South Dakota State University. SDDOT developed traffic control and sequencing plans for the roadway while working to make the area navigable for all, whether on the road or traveling on bike or by foot. Two bridges over I-29 were replaced with a single structure while four ramps were reconstructed. Sidewalks were added to facilitate pedestrian traffic, while new traffic signals helped move traffic along better. Today, the community celebrates the $17 million project and benefits from the increased safety and ability to grow and remain attractive for area businesses and industries.
