Texas Department of Transportation: US 281 North Expansion, Segment 1

As one of the most congested and traveled corridors in the San Antonio region, over 91,000 drivers use US 281 North daily. The corridor experiences over 743,000 hours of annual travel delays, according to the Texas A&M Transportation Institute.

To address this congestion issue – as well as increase mobility and promote multi-modal options by enhancing connectivity and safety for the regional community – Texas DOT completed this $228 million route expansion, which included new High Occupancy Vehicle or HOV lanes, a direct connection to park and ride facilities, bike and pedestrian accommodations, and new flyover ramps for better driver connections. The agency designed the entire project – years in the making – to provide equitable access for all users along the corridor and better move people safer and more efficiently.
