US 59 in Laredo and Webb County is a well-traveled one for residents on their daily commutes. Congestion was beginning to be an issue for drivers, so Texas DOT embarked on a $21.9 million mobility improvement project. Texas DOT constructed an interchange over International Boulevard, a transportation priority of the city and county. The interchange on US 59 Loop, also known as the I-69W corridor, brings this portion of roadway to urban interstate design standards and falls in line with the congressional legislation concerning the entire I-69 system.
The project was completed in just 16 months, alleviating much of the congestion on US 59 for the many drivers in the area. The project is also part of a master overpass plan in Laredo, known as the US 59 Upgrade Project, which will eventually construct five new overpasses in the area to continue providing a more efficient transportation system for residents and visitors.
