Over the last year, the Utah Department of Transportation has placed greater emphasis on transportation technology projects. Through the creation of the new Utah DOT Transportation Technology Group, the agency deployed a collection of projects called “Utah Connected” that is a strong representation to the department’s commitment to improving mobility, safety, and quality of life for all state residents. Utah DOT’s connectivity, made possible through its robust fiber optic network, encourages partnerships, innovations, and long-range strategies for access to transit and utilization of technology in transportation – especially as transit, pedestrian, and other multi-modal trips are on the rise. The Utah Connected project also feature automated and connected vehicle applications that build on previous research regarding connected transit, connected snowplows, and automated vehicles that helps solve the “first-mile/last-mile” problem.
